Sustainability in Hospitality

Sustainability in hospitality is no longer a distant ideal, it’s a practical and exciting opportunity to reimagine the guest experience. Every small change in materials, sourcing, and design is a step toward a lighter footprint and a more thoughtful future. The hospitality industry is uniquely positioned to lead by example, offering comfort and care while reducing environmental impact.

Understanding the Terms: Sustainable, Biodegradable, Compostable:

Sustainable materials are those designed to minimize harm to the planet. They might be reusable, recyclable, responsibly sourced, or made with lower energy demands. These choices help reduce reliance on single-use plastics and make long-term sense for both people and planet.

Biodegradable products naturally break down over time, offering a gentler return to the earth than plastics. While they still need the right environment to do their job, they represent a meaningful middle ground in reducing waste.

Compostable materials go a step further, they turn into nutrient-rich soil under the right conditions. Compostables are a shining example of how smart design can work in harmony with nature, leaving no trace behind.

Each option has value. Each one helps move hospitality in the right direction.

• Sustainable materials minimize environmental impact by reducing reliance on single-use products. • Compostable and biodegradable options break down naturally, keeping waste out of landfills and oceans.

Reframing the Impact of Materials

The hospitality sector generates significant waste, but that also means it has immense potential for improvement. From toothbrushes and slippers to packaging and key cards, many of the items used today were never designed with environmental impact in mind, they were built for convenience, not circularity. Yet more and more properties are rethinking those materials, swapping out high-waste items for lower-impact alternatives that perform just as well.

These changes don’t require compromise. They represent progress.

Going Beyond Plastics

Plastic is just one part of the equation. Sustainability in hospitality can also include upgrading to plant-based key cards, rethinking laundry processes, using natural cleaning products, and choosing biodegradable packaging. Thoughtful change happens in layers, and each layer adds up.

When considered with intention, sustainability becomes a design tool.

Positive Outcomes of Switching

Switching just one amenity to a better alternative can reduce thousands of units of waste per year. It can also enhance guest perception, lower disposal costs, and align with sustainability goals already shared by travelers, teams, and global initiatives.

Guests notice the difference. And they value the care behind it.

By choosing products that break down naturally or can be reused over time, properties signal that they’re not just reacting, they’re leading. And leadership in this space doesn’t require being perfect. It simply means making better choices, one item at a time.

A Lighter Way Forward

Sustainability isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about doing the next right thing, with intention, clarity, and purpose.

Every material choice tells a story. Every swap is a small act of responsibility. And together, they create an experience that reflects the values of modern hospitality.

The future is already shifting. And it looks a lot less wasteful.
